Occasionally, a customer will tell us that they've overheard the critters referring to themselves as Scalett-ites. At first they think the chickens and cats are talking about an obsession with icicle-like deposits of calcium hanging from the roofs of caves. We can understand the confusion, especially since Pimiento always talks with her beak full.

But let us clear this up once and for all: The Rumpus Critters do indeed refer to themselves as Scalett-ites, and it has nothing to do with caves, and everything to do with Kurtis Scaletta. We all loved his first book, Mudville, with its blending of magical realism and baseball.

Now, with Mamba Point, the critters/ Scalett-ites are freaking out, because not only is it really good (of course), it also features animals quite predominantly. Spike the Wise Lizard is especially tickled because it takes place in his motherland, Africa.

Needless to say, we're all excited to have Kurtis visit Wild Rumpus. We just hope he isn't mobbed by star-struck Scalett-ites on his arrival.
